Lowville, NY- The Village
of Lowville Board of Trustees unanimously voted to formally appoint Daryl
Ortlieb as Chief of Police at the Lowville Police Department during their
regular meeting on Wednesday, September 18.
Mr. Ortlieb has served
in the position on a provisional basis since October 16, 2023, pending
the successful completion of the Civil Service exam for Chief of Police.
The exam was held in March, with Village officials recently receiving the
results earlier this month to notify them of Mr. Ortlieb’s successful
completion.
Mr. Ortlieb has
over 20 years of experience in law enforcement, first joining the Lowville
Police Department as a patrolman in 2001 after spending two years as a
correction officer. He then joined the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office as a
deputy in 2007, eventually becoming the K9 handler, serving through 2015.
He then served as the Officer in Charge at the Boonville Police Department.
Mr. Ortlieb left Boonville in 2019 to rejoin the Lowville Police Department,
where he served as a patrolman until his provisional appointment as Chief
of Police last October.
Since taking over
the department, Chief Ortlieb has worked through the support of the Village
Board to fill vacant positions, update an aging fleet of vehicles, and modernizing equipment. In September of 2023 the Board of
Trustees approved filling two full-time patrolman vacancies and the
purchase of a new patrol vehicle. Both officers have since been hired. One
has completed all training and required field time and has been a full-time
patrolman since late July. The other is currently completing training at
the police academy and will be ready to serve full-time by the end of the
year. This will bring the agency to full staffing levels with three full-time
patrolman and six part-timers, in addition to Chief Ortlieb and his
Sargeant- Matt Martin, enabling the department to resume 24-hour coverage
in the village.
Chief Ortlieb
said he is pleased to see the progress made in obtaining the goal of
providing full-time coverage in the village and expressed his thanks to the
Board of Trustees for their support in the process.
