Lowville Village Board Appoints Current Patrolman
Daryl Ortlieb as Next Police Chief

Lowville, NY- The Village of
Lowville Board of Trustees has unanimously voted to appoint current
Lowville Police patrolman Daryl Ortlieb as the next Chief of Police at the
Lowville Police Department.
The vote happened
following an executive session at Monday morning’s continuation of the
September 20, 2023 regular board meeting. The
appointment, effective October 16, is provisional pending Mr. Ortlieb’s
successful completion of a Civil Service exam for Chief of Police.
The Village had
three final candidates to choose from after publicly advertising the
position. Five applications were received, with two candidates withdrawing
before the end of the process.
“It was a tough
decision, we had three well qualified candidates, but ultimately I feel we
made the best choice for the Village going forward,” Mayor Joseph Beagle
told linkinglewiscounty.com.
Mr. Ortlieb,
currently a patrolman at the department, will take over for interim Chief
L. Michael Tabolt- who filled the role vacated after the June 29 retirement of former Chief Randy Roggie amidst a State
investigation into alleged misconduct allegations.
“The Village
Board appreciates Chief Tabolt stepping up to fill in as we went through
the process of filling the vacancy created by Chief Roggie’s retirement,”
Mayor Beagle said, adding that Chief Tabolt will likely stay on for a week
or so after Mr. Ortlieb takes over the department to ensure a smooth
transition.
In July, the
Village Board promoted longtime patrolman Matt Martin to the position of
Sergeant, second in command at the department.
Mr. Ortlieb has
over 20 years of experience in law enforcement, first joining the Lowville
Police Department as a patrolman in 2001 after spending two years as a
correction officer. He then joined the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office as a
deputy in 2007, eventually becoming the K9 handler, serving through 2015.
He then joined the Boonville Police Department as the Officer in Charge.
Mr. Ortlieb left Boonville in 2019 to rejoin the Lowville Police
Department.
“I’m very excited
to get started in my new role in the very same village that I was born and
raised in,” Mr. Ortlieb told linkinglewiscounty.com. “The Village
Board has been great so far and has always worked well with the police
department. The first order of business is to hire officers to fill current
vacancies and get the village better coverage. Sgt. Martin and I look
forward to the challenge.”
During their September 20th
meeting, the Village Board of Trustees approved filling two full-time patrolman
vacancies currently open in the police department. A new patrol vehicle was
also authorized, mostly using funds set aside in the capital budget for
vehicle replacements.
