| Former Beaver River Principal Pleads Guilty to Endangering Welfare of a Child 10/26/18 12:30pm By: Nick Altmire |
Stamp, 36, of Croghan, appeared in Lewis County Court this morning, with the Honorable Daniel R. King presiding, pleading GUILTY to a misdemeanor charge of Acting in a Manner Injurious to a Child. Sentencing was set for December 20, when Mr. Stamp is expected to be placed on a three year probation term. The plea deal satisfies all charges in a three-count indictment handed up by a Lewis County Grand Jury in July. After rejecting a plea deal from the District Attorney's office, during a May 4th court appearance, the case was presented to the grand jury. The grand jury had indicted Mr. Stamp on two counts of third-degree Criminal Sex Act, class "E" felonies, and one count of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a class "A" misdemeanor. A trial date had been scheduled for January 14, 2019. With today's guilty plea, Mr. Stamp admitted to subjecting a female under the age of seventeen to "unwanted physical contact and inappropriate verbally suggestive adult communication," in the Town of Croghan between October 1, 2016 and January 21, 2017, according to court documents. The victim in the case was in agreement with the plea deal offered, according to Lewis County District Attorney Leanne K. Moser. "These are difficult cases," Ms. Moser said after the court appearance. "Sometimes you have to weigh the harm that testifying can have on a victim by reliving a traumatic event," Ms. Moser continued. "It was important for her to be heard and to be believed and we feel that was accomplished with this outcome." The charges did not involve any students in the Beaver River district. Beaver River Central School terminated Mr. Stamp's employment during a vote at a December 29, 2017 meeting of the board of education. Mr. Stamp started employment at the district in July of 2017, previously working at the Gouverneur Central School District. |
