Lowville, NY- The Lewis County Board of Legislators tabled the resolution
presented last evening to set a public hearing to start the process to potentially
abolish the elected position of County Treasurer, in favor of an appointed
Director of Finance, sending the plan back to the Human Resources legislative
    committee for further review.

The legislators were presented with a resolution to set a public hearing on the
matter for September 18, during a special meeting. At that time they would have
decided whether to move forward with a public referendum for the general
election ballot. That plan changed when Lewis County Attorney Joan McNichol
informed the board that there needs to be a 60 day period between the hearing
and the referendum vote, which didn't leave enough time to get the referendum
on to the general election ballot for this November.

Legislators ultimately tabled the resolution, asking the Human Resources
committee to determine if the County could instead have an elected Comptroller
position replace a Treasurer position, which could possibly allow minimum
qualifications to be set for candidates, That suggestion was made by Legislator
Greg Kulzer and seemed favorable to most board members.

Mrs. McNichol said she would have to do some additional research to make sure
that can be done in a non-charter county like Lewis County.

The Human Resources legislative committee next meets on September 19.
