Lowville- After the resignation of Deputy Daryl R. Ortlieb, the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department no longer has a handler for its canine unit. Deputy Ortlieb has handled the canine program at the sheriff's department since it's inception in December of 2012, when the department purchased K-9 Wyman with a combination of forfeiture money from the District Attorney's Office, and donations from individuals and the Lowville Elks Club, There were no details available on the reason of the resignation, at this point. The department is now looking into either selling K-9 Wyman or finding someone else to be a handler, although anyone else would need extensive training with the dog prior to receiving certification, County Manager Elizabeth Swearingin told the Watertown Daily Times.
