Lowville- Lewis County General Hospital announced the hiring of family and neuromusculoskeletal medicine physician Dr. John Leuenberger, who will join the South Lewis Health Center, located at 3926 Route 12, in Lyons Falls, beginning Tuesday, Aug. 11. Hospital officials said Dr. Leuenberger will be bringing something new to the community with his practice of osteopathic medicine and medical acupuncture, in addition to family medicine. Osteopathic medicine is a philosophy that is based on a whole person health care approach, which focuses on the body’s natural ability to heal. According to officials, most problems can be addressed with this approach including musculoskeletal pain, asthma, sinus disorders, carpal tunnel, headaches or migraines, fibromyalgia, pelvic or abdominal pain, and pain of swelling in pregnancy. Everyone from the newborn to the elderly may benefit from this treatment, hospital officials said. Combining osteopathic medicine and acupuncture is an innovative approach to treatment and care, which Dr. Leuenberger is excited to bring to the community. Dr. Leuenberger attended medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, Erie, Pa., where he received a doctor of osteopathic medicine degree. He has served as a family medicine resident and as a clinical assistant instructor in the department of family medicine for United Health Services Family Medicine Program, in Johnson City, NY. Dr. Leuenberger has received numerous honors and awards, including the UHS Mark J. Marmora D.O. Award for excellence in Osteopathic Medicine and Treatment. He has a state license for medicine and surgery with acupuncture privileges and is a member of the American Academy of Osteopathy, American Academy of Family Physicians and American Academy of Medical Acupuncture.
