Russell M.
Houppert - Castorland
April 27, 1936 – November 5,
2026
Russell M. Houppert, 90, passed away on Thursday, November 5, 2026.
Born on April 27, 1936, Russell
was the son of Clinton and Bertha Houppert. He attended Father Leo’s Memorial School in Croghan, NY.
On September 30, 1961,
Russell married Judith “Judy” Ferguson at Sacred Heart
Church in Watertown, NY.
Together, they shared 65 years of marriage.
Russell was a
hardworking man throughout his life. He began his working years at Climax
in Castorland, later operated a farm in Carthage, and eventually pursued his
passion for the outdoors by raising deer at his hunting preserve, Houp’s
Acres, in Castorland. He was never one to shy away from a hard day’s work,
and his strong work ethic was a defining part of who he was.
An avid
outdoorsman, Russell had a lifelong love of hunting. He especially enjoyed
his trips out West in pursuit of big game, returning home with stories,
memories, and trophies from his adventures. His trophy room was a source of
great pride and a reflection of the many experiences he treasured over the
years.
Russell was also
a very social man who enjoyed spending time with friends. When he wasn’t
working or hunting, one of his favorite pastimes was getting together with
the guys for a good game of euchre. The friendships, conversation, and
friendly competition around the card table brought him many years of
enjoyment.
He is survived by
his wife of 65 years, Judith “Judy” (Ferguson)
Houppert; his five children: Deborah (Peter) Bibbins, Robin Kampnich,
Daniel (Lori) Houppert, Bonita “Bonnie” (Gary) Farney, and Cheryl (Jay) Steiner;
12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and his brother, Rodney
Houppert.
In addition to
his parents, Russell was predeceased by his six siblings: Walter, Harold,
Stanley, Arthur, Helen, and Beatrice.
Russell will be
remembered for his tireless work ethic, his love of the outdoors, his
outgoing personality, and the many stories and memories he shared with
family and friends.
A funeral Mass
will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 14, 2026, at St.
Stephen’s Parish, with Rev. Joseph Morgan, Pastor officiating. A
celebration of life luncheon to follow in the parish hall.
In lieu of
flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Stephen’s Parish, 9748
Main St., Croghan, NY 13327.
