Dolores “Dee” Marie Hurd, 86, of
Chesapeake, Va, passed peacefully on September 29, 2026, on family property
in New York that she lovingly called “paradise,” under the care of hospice.
Dee was born
September 23, 1940, in Del Norte, Colorado, to Dolores D’Avignon and Leroy
“Corky” Moore. As a child she was known as “Fronzy”;
later in life she went by “Dee.”
She married
Samuel Clark Hurd on January 27, 1963. Together they raised two sons, Jerry
Brian and Michael, while following Sam’s Navy service through Illinois,
South Carolina, Virginia, Italy, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Texas. Their
marriage continued until February 13, 2002.
When Jerry joined
the Navy, Dee moved to Virginia to help raise her grandson Tyler while both
of Tyler’s parents served on active duty. After Jerry later divorced,
remarried, and moved to New York, Dee chose to remain in Virginia among her
friends.
During her
working years Dee served as a receptionist and secretary for a funeral home
and several home builders, but sewing was her true passion. She poured her
creativity, patience, and love into every stitch, gifting countless quilts
and handmade pieces—especially to new children—and gladly teaching others
along the way. With her needle she wove a lasting thread of love; those
creations remain warm reminders of the love she so freely gave.
She was preceded
in death by her parents, Dolores D’Avignon and Leroy “Corky” Moore; her
sisters Sandra “Sandy” Bettger (Dwayne Bettger), Ruth “Ruthie” Kroschel
(Wesley Kroschel), and Jackie Plotner (Phillip Plotner); her nephews Paul
Plotner and Chris Moore; and her former husband, Samuel Hurd.
She is survived
by her sons, Jerry Hurd (Heather Hlad) and Michael Hurd (Tina Helmer); her
grandchildren, Tyler Hurd (Deanna Nicholson), Ashleigh Toney (Derek Toney),
Zachary Hurd, and Alexyn Hunkins; her
great-grandchildren, Amira Hurd, Brett Toney, and Caden Toney; her
brothers, Harold Moore (Doris “Dorie” Moore) and Bert Moore (Glenda
Shaffer); her sister, Dorothy Martz (Jerry Martz); her former
sister-in-law, Norma Moore; and many other relatives and friends.
In accordance
with her wishes, her ashes will be returned to Colorado at
a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests friends make a donation to their local Hospice organization.
