LOWVILLE – Bernard H. “Bernie”
Bush, 85, of Ridge Road, passed away Thursday morning, October 8, 2026 at his home, under the care of his family and Lewis
County Hospice.
He is survived by
his beloved wife of 66 years, Barbara; four children and their spouses,
Duane and Jan Bush of Little Chute, WI, Kimberly and Larry Ritz of Croghan;
Michael and Christine Bush of Lowville, David and Cathy Bush of Ozark, MO; 10
grandchildren, Joel, Cody, Jessica, Chelsea, David, Jillian, Jennica, Kyle,
Hunter, and Tristan; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Clara Matulewicz of
Lowville; a sister-in-law, Wilma Bush of Lowville; several nieces, nephews
and cousins. He is predeceased by his
cherished daughter and son-in-law, Shannon and Loren Waldron; his siblings,
Margaret (Leonard) Tabolt, Lawrence (Wanda) Bush, Marie (Verle Sr.) Walters,
Theresa (Maurice) Birchenough, Robert (Beverly) Bush, Christina (Walter) Thoma, Clement Bush; a brother-in-law, Jack Matulewicz.
Bernie was born
on November 16, 1940 at home in Lowville, NY, a
son of the late Henry and Frances Becker Bush and graduated from Lowville
Academy and Central School in 1958. He
worked for Dadville Tree Nursery. On September 10, 1960, he married Barbara
E. Smith at St. James Catholic Church, Carthage. Bernie worked for the Cheese Plant in Croghan,
Payne Jones, and for Kraft in Lowville for 30 years, retiring on June 1,
2003. In retirement, Bernie drove
truck for V.S. Virkler & Son.
Bernie was a
communicant of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Lowville. He has been a member of Lowville
Volunteer Fire Department since 1973, service in various capacities. He was a life member of BPOE #1605,
Lowville Elks Lodge. His other
memberships include, Lewis County Agricultural Society Fair Board, Moose
Lodge in Zephyrhills, FL, and Black River Valley Campers. He was a past member of the Black River
Valley Fiddlers.
Bernie raced
stock cars at Watertown Speedway and Evans Mills Raceway in the late 1960’s
and early 1970’s. He enjoyed hunting, and helping with fire department
activities. Most of all, he enjoyed
spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Bernie and Barb also enjoyed wintering in
Zephyrhills Florida. Bernie was
always there to lend a helping hand whenever needed and will be deeply
missed.
A funeral Mass
will be said at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday October 14, 2026
at St. Peter’s Catholic Church with Rev. Sony G. Pulickal,
Pastor, officiating. Burial will
follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery, New Bremen.
A luncheon at Lowville Fire Department will immediately follow the
burial, all are welcome. Calling hours are from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00
p.m. on Tuesday, October 13, 2026 at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be
made to Friends of Lewis County Hospice, P.O Box 266, Lowville, NY 13367 or
Lowville Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 80, Lowville, NY 13367.
