Janet E. Gydesen
LYONS FALLS- Janet E.
Gydesen, 90, a longtime resident of Lyons Falls,
passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at her home with her
family by her side under the care of Lewis County Hospice.
She was born on
May 14, 1936, in Constableville, New York, a daughter of the late Carlton
and Margaret Chisholm Blankman. Janet grew up in the village of Boonville
and graduated from Boonville High School with the Class of 1954. She
furthered her education at the State University of New York at Oswego, where she obtained a bachelor's degree in
education. On August 9, 1958, she married Robert B. Gydesen, at the
Boonville United Methodist Church, with Rev. Robert Holmes officiating. The
couple settled on the outskirts of Lyons Falls for a short time before
moving to their home in the village in 1962, where they remained. Mr.
Gydesen passed away in 2008. Janet was a dedicated third-grade teacher at
Constableville Elementary School in the South Lewis School District. She
loved teaching, and her impact extended far beyond the classroom. Many
former students invited her to their high school graduations, while others
followed her example and became teachers themselves. While teaching, she
proudly earned a master's degree in education from St. Lawrence University.
Janet retired in 1995 after 33 years with the school district.
She enjoyed
taking drives, shopping, dining out, and spending summers in Brantingham.
Janet attended
Forest Presbyterian Church in Lyons Falls for many years.
Janet is survived
by one son, Brad (Susan) Gydesen of Croghan; two granddaughters, Emily
(Robert) Brown and Lydia (Anthony) Diaz; two great-granddaughters, Keyanna
Diaz and Katherine Brown; and several nieces and nephews.
She was
predeceased by her husband; a beloved daughter, Beth Ann Gydesen, in 2021;
a brother, Paul Blankman; and a stepsister, Charlotte Rounds.
In keeping with
Janet's wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral services. Private
burial will occur at the convenience of the family in Port Leyden Cemetery.
Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the Lyons Falls Fire
and Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 520, Lyons Falls, NY 13368. Arrangements are
under the care of Mills Funeral Home of Boonville.
Janet's family
