LOWVILLE– Alvin Zehr Jr.,
94, formerly of Valley View Courts, passed away peacefully on Thursday
morning, September 10, 2026 at Lewis County
Residential Healthcare Facility.
Alvin is survived
by his three children and their spouses, Debbie (Lauren) Zehr; Daryl
(Teresa) Zehr; and Denise (Darryl) Roggie all of Lowville; his siblings, Eunice
Gingerich, Paul and Mary Zehr, Elizabeth and Roger Crassi, Lena Zehr, Vera
Ferguson, Mary Graves, Arthur Zehr, David and Mary Zehr, and
sisters-in-law, Jane Zehr, Pauline Zehr, and Elma Ebersole; his in-laws,
Nancy and Marvin Widrick of Florida; Vernon and Doreen Roes of
Harrisonburg, VA; Leonard and Judy Roes of Lowville; Melvin and Judy Roes
of Lowville; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and
cousins. He is predeceased by his
beloved wife, Irene; one grandchild, Brynn Jewel Roggie; and siblings,
Ellen Martin, Richard Zehr, Pearl Zehr, Kenneth Zehr, Adeline Knechtel,
Beulah Roggie, LeEtta Owens, Lloyd Zehr, Mark Zehr, and Joseph Zehr.
Alvin was born April
2, 1932 in Naumburg, New York
the son of the late Alvin Zehr Sr. and Vera Moser Zehr. He attended Beaver
River Central School. Alvin worked
on the family farm until he was drafted in 1952. He was allowed to go into PAX service in Backnang, Germany from 1952-1954, building homes for
refugees. On June 23, 1955 he married Irene Roes at Dadville
Mennonite Church, with Rev. Lloyd Boshart officiating. After their marriage, Alvin worked at
Climax Manufacturing in Castorland, and the couple owned and operated dairy
farms on Van Amber Road and Erie Canal Road. After retiring from
agriculture, they moved to Swiss Road, Castorland, where he worked as a
logger and as a carpenter with his brother-in-law, Melvin Roes. He was a Choice Books representative
along with his wife. Later in life,
he was a night security guard at Empire State Mines in Balmat, NY. Whenever he wasn’t working, he could be
found helping on his daughter’s farms, working in the woods, or shoveling
snow.
Alvin was a charter
member of Naumburg Mennonite Church.
He loved the Lord and had a servant’s heart. He served in many capacities at the
church, as Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday school teacher, Bible
school teacher, chorister, transport coordinator, a member of the RMM board
and the local mission board. In the
early 1970’s he and Irene became involved with the church planting at
Carthage Mennonite Church. Alvin
loved to sing and was involved in many singing groups throughout the
years. He loved his family and
prayed for each one.
The family would

A graveside
service will be at 9:45 a.m. on Thursday September 17, 2026
at Naumburg Mennonite Cemetery, with memorial service to follow at 11:00
a.m. on Thursday September 17, 2016 at Naumburg
Mennonite Church. Calling hours are
from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday September 16, 2026
at the church. In lieu of flowers,
contributions may be made to Rosedale International, 2120 East 5th
Ave., Columbus, Ohio 43219. Arrangements are with Iseneker
Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville.
