GYMO Announces Leadership Transition and Career
Opportunities
WATERTOWN, NY — GYMO
Architecture, Engineering, & Land Surveying, DPC has announced a
leadership transition that reflects both the firm's strong foundation and
its vision for continued growth.
Matthew Cervini,
PE, has been appointed the role of Chief Executive Officer and Director of
Engineering. Cervini succeeds Patrick Scordo, PE, who led the firm for 17
years and will remain involved in a part-time role as Principal Engineer.
The transition
marks the next chapter in a story that spans decades of growth, resilience,
and service throughout Northern New York.
Scordo's
engineering career began in 1987 with O'Brien & Gere Engineers, where
he worked in the firm's Watertown satellite office for five years and then
transferred to the Syracuse office for five years. Wanting to get back to
his hometown, he joined GYMO in 1996 as Director of the Engineering
Department, became a shareholder in 2002, and became CEO in 2009. During
his tenure, the firm expanded its services, strengthened its reputation as
a trusted partner for municipal and private clients, and successfully
navigated significant economic challenges, including the Great Recession in
2007-2009, the Covid-19 Pandemic in 2020, and two separate instances of
60-70% GYMO partnership turnover.
"When I look
back, what stands out most is our resilience," said Scordo.
"We've weathered difficult economic periods and continued moving
forward. More importantly, we've built a family-oriented team that cares
deeply about our clients and our communities and wants to make a positive
difference."
Scordo believes
that nothing drives an individual more than signing your name on a set of drawings, or being an owner of a Professional
corporation. He notes that GYMO's impact extends well beyond the projects
it has designed and managed. Over the years, many professionals who began
their careers at GYMO have gone on to serve municipalities, NYS agencies,
and consulting engineering firms throughout the region, carrying their
experience and expertise into communities across Northern New York.
"The people
I've worked with over the years give me tremendous confidence in where GYMO
is headed," Scordo said. "The firm's success has always been
about creating a family environment and investing in people."
Although stepping
back from day-to-day leadership, Scordo will continue supporting clients
and projects as they move toward completion while helping ensure a smooth
transition for both staff and clients.
For Cervini, the
transition represents continuity as much as change.
"We're a
community-minded family," said Cervini. "As we grow, we'll
continue building a team-driven culture, serving our clients with
integrity, and expanding our involvement in the communities we call
home."
Cervini
emphasized that preserving GYMO's culture remains a top priority while
continuing to pursue opportunities for growth. Under his leadership, the
firm will remain focused on being a trusted resource for municipal and
private clients while expanding its reach, strengthening community
partnerships, and investing in the next generation of professionals.
As GYMO looks to
the future, both Scordo and Cervini point to the firm's people as its greatest strength. Developing future leaders and
creating opportunities for the next generation of professionals will remain
central to the firm's long-term success.
To support that
continued growth, GYMO is actively seeking talented professionals to join
its team. Current career opportunities span multiple disciplines and
experience levels, offering the chance to work on impactful projects
throughout the North Country and beyond.
