REMINDER: HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE RECYCLING DAY

The Development Authority of the North Country is reminding residents who have items that can’t be thrown away in regular trash that they will be able to dispose of them this Saturday free of charge in Lowville.

For the past fifteen years, the Development Authority of the North Country has partnered with Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence Counties and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation to host Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Days. These free recycling events provide the opportunity for residents of the tri-county region the chance to safely dispose of hazardous items like paints, chemicals, pesticides, among others.

The details for this Saturday’s free event in Lewis County are as follows:

WHERE: 5481 Bostwick Street, Lowville, NY 13367 (Town of Lowville Highway Garage)

WHEN: Saturday, August 29th from 8am-12pm

“The Development Authority’s free Household Hazardous Waste Days serve as the perfect opportunity to safely dispose of items you simply cannot toss in regular trash, such as fluorescent light tubes, pool chemicals or other items that have been sitting in a garage or basement,” said Shawn Thornton, Materials Management Director for the Development Authority of the North Country. “The Authority is proud to collaborate with our Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence County partners and the NYSDEC to host these no-cost recycling days. Doing your part to safeguard the environment is easy, and the Development Authority is happy to help achieve that goal.”

HHW events at SUNY Canton and in Watertown already occurred in May and June. To date, 546 households have participated and more than 99,000 pounds of hazardous waste has been collected. There are more HHW events planned in September and October. Those details are as follows:

·      St. Lawrence County- 85 Robinson Road, Massena, NY on September 26th from 8am-1pm

·      Jefferson County- 21897 County Route 190, Watertown, NY on October 10th from 8am-12pm

To pre-register for any of these events and view the complete list of items that will be accepted for disposal, residents are encouraged to visit https://www.northcountryrecycles.org/HHWRegistration or by calling 315-661-3233.
