Lowville Free Library Celebrates a Decade of Meghan
Harney's Leadership and
Begins Search for Next Director
LOWVILLE, NY — The Lowville
Free Library Board of Trustees announces that Library Director Meghan
Harney will be departing the library on August 1 after nearly a decade of
dedicated service to the Lowville community. As she concludes her time at
Lowville Free Library, the Board extends its sincere gratitude for the
lasting impact she has made on the library, its
patrons, and the community as a whole.
Over the past
decade, Meghan has helped shape Lowville Free Library into a vibrant,
welcoming community destination where people of all ages can learn,
connect, and grow. Her leadership has strengthened the library's role far
beyond its traditional services, expanding opportunities throughout the
community.
During her
tenure, Meghan championed new programs and partnerships that broadened the
library's reach and welcomed new audiences through collaborations with
local schools, Head Start, Hand in Hand Early Childhood Center, Cornell
Cooperative Extension, Double Play Community Center, and numerous other
community organizations. Under her leadership, the library expanded
offerings that include bilingual storytimes,
themed play sessions, take-home activity kits, technology assistance, and
welcoming meeting space for local organizations.
Meghan also led
efforts to strengthen the library's identity and visibility throughout the
community. She oversaw the development of the library's new logo and
branding, expanded the library's social media presence, and continually
found new ways to connect residents with the resources and opportunities
available through their local library.
Beyond Lowville,
Meghan has been an active leader within the North Country library
community. She received North Country Library System's Library Champion
Award in 2023 in recognition of her advocacy and leadership, presented a
session at the 2024 New York Library Association Conference, was recognized
as a NNY Business 20 Under 40 leader in 2025, and recently received her
Master of Information and Library Science degree. Her commitment to
collaboration has benefited libraries throughout Lewis County and the
broader North Country.
Meghan has
fostered a culture of creativity and accessibility that will continue to
shape Lowville Free Library for years to come. As the library prepares for
this transition, the Board of Trustees is seeking its next Library Director
to continue building on this strong foundation. The full-time position
offers an opportunity to guide the library’s programming, outreach,
operations, and long-term vision. The Board welcomes applicants who are
passionate about public service, community engagement, and helping
libraries evolve to meet the changing needs of their communities.
