ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON CAROLYN M. HETTRICH, MD, MPH
WILL JOIN LEWIS
COUNTY ORTHOPEDICS IN SEPTEMBER
LOWVILLE, NY - Lewis County
Health System and Lewis County Orthopedics are pleased to announce that
Board-Certified Orthopedic Surgeon Carolyn M. Hettrich, M.D, MPH, will join
the medical staff in September 2026.

Dr. Hettrich will further enhance local access to orthopedic services for
the communities we serve."
A native of
Portland, Oregon, Dr. Hettrich attended Pomona College in Claremont,
California, earning a degree in Human Biology. Dr. Hettrich received her
medical degree from the University of Washington School of Medicine in
Seattle, Washington. Her residency training in Orthopedic Surgery was
completed at the #1-ranked Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City,
which included a one-year research fellowship focused on tendon-to-bone
healing. She also earned a Master of
Public Health (MPH) from Columbia University during that time. At the
completion of her residency, she won the prestigious Lewis Clark Wagner
Award for Excellence in Research from HSS, as well as the Cabaud Memorial
Research Award from AOSSM for the best basic science study. After residency, Dr. Hettrich did a
fellowship in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at Vanderbilt
University. During the fellowship, Dr. Hettrich was an assistant team
physician for Vanderbilt University, the Nashville Sounds, and the
Nashville Predators.
Dr. Hettrich is
an Active Member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons. She is the
only member of the Neer Circle (part of ASES) in the North Country and
greater Syracuse area. The esteemed
group has only 183 members in all of the US - and
most are at major academic centers. She is a member and holds
leadership roles in AOSSM, AAOS, and ASES, and currently runs the AAOS
Shoulder Elbow Registry.
Dr. Hettrich has
a special interest in caring for athletes of all ages, particularly those
involved in overhead sports. She was a former team physician for USA
Volleyball, the University of Iowa, and the University of Kentucky and
served as the Chief of the Shoulder Service at Harvard Brigham and Women’s
Hospital. She has also
authored/edited three textbooks, published over 120 original scientific
publications, and runs the world’s largest
shoulder research group, MOON Shoulder.
Dr. Hettrich
works to restore function and mobility so that you can return to the
activities that give your life meaning, whether on the playing field or in
your daily life. Clinically, Dr. Hettrich is the highest-volume shoulder
replacement surgeon in the area, doing custom shoulder replacements. She treats the majority
of shoulder, elbow, and knee conditions and
uses the most innovative arthroscopic and minimally invasive techniques
for:
* Arthroscopic shoulder surgery (rotator
cuff repair and shoulder stabilization/labrum repair
* Shoulder replacement (revision and
primary, using custom guides and/or implants for each patient)
* Open shoulder surgery (shoulder
stabilization, massive rotator cuff repairs, and muscle transfers)
* Elbow arthroscopy/ligament
reconstruction (Tommy John surgery)/tendon repair
* Surgery for the disorders of the
scapula (shoulder blade)
* Proximal humerus,
clavicle, and scapula fractures
* ACL repairs and reconstruction (the
latest techniques for ACL repair)
* Meniscus surgery
