CLAYTON- Marcia E. Campany, 74,
died peacefully Saturday, June 20th, 2026 under
the care of Hospice of Jefferson County in Watertown NY.
Born August 22, 1951 in
Watertown NY, she was the daughter of Helen Hoch Campany
and Robert “Pickle” Campany. Marcia was raised in Beaver Falls NY
until the age of 7, at which time the family, including her sister Julie,
moved to Croghan where she lived until she completed her education. She
attended Father Leo Memorial School through the 9th grade; she was a 1969
graduate of Beaver River Central School, and a proud “Dolphin”, graduating
in 1973 from LeMoyne College with a degree in English Literature and Education,
graduating summa cum laude. Marcia’s student teaching was at LaFayette High
School, where she was introduced to the sport of Lacrosse.
After babysitting for many families in Croghan, her
jobs while in high school and college ranged from a bowling pin stripper
and putty master at AMF in Lowville, to working in the silk screen
department at Beaverite products in Beaver Falls.
After Marcia’s graduation from LeMoyne, her first
teaching position at 1000 Islands Central School ended up being her last, a
career spanning 33 years in the English Department, where Marcia’s love of
reading poetry, literature, fiction and non-fiction was shared with
thousands of students during her career.
Marcia acted as yearbook advisor for multiple years, and essential
contributor to the underground publication “The One-Horned Viking”, as well
as the “proud” recipient of the “Flying U” award. Not a golfer, but she was
a member of “Arnie’s Army” for the annual AO Open Golf Tournament. Her contagious laugh was always
present. Serving as a mentor to
students at the Community School in Cape Vincent was critical to changing young people's lives.
During her teaching career Marcia lived in Clayton on
Riverside Drive in a second story apartment over Pulver’s Variety Store,
enjoying unobstructed views of the St. Lawrence River. During summers, Marcia worked for the Pulver’s in the store along with her sister Julie.
In 1983 she was temporarily displaced from her apartment after the fire
that destroyed McCormick’s Restaurant due to smoke and water damage. In 1988 she was permanently displaced
when fire destroyed the Pulver Block, known then as the Ben Franklin Store.
In the mid 1990’s, Marcia built a home next to her brother Rob on Blind Bay
in the town of Clayton.
Just prior to her retirement in 2006 and for years
after, Marcia worked for the Tomaiuoli family at
the Boateak on Bluff Island where she not only
enjoyed working for Cookie, but also the boat rides to and from the island,
Cookies dogs Buddy and Bluffy, and the hundreds of visitors making their
way to the unique shop each year.
Marcia served on the Board for the Thousand Islands
Museum for many years. She also
directed several Clayton Community Theater Productions. Marcia was an active member of Delta
Kappa Gamma promoting professional and personal growth of women educators
and excellence in education. Marcia was a communicant of St. Cyril’s in
Alexandria Bay and St. Mary’s in Clayton, where she served on the parish
council and taught religious education.
Marcia is survived by her
faithful yellow lab, Annie, her sister Julie Goodison (Mike) Cicero, her
brother Rob Campany of Clayton, nephews Michael
and Lonnie Campany, former sister-in-law Chris
Cahill Campany, her uncle Richard Campany, and dozens of cousins. Marcia was predeceased by her mother
Helen (1921-1986), her father Pickle (1919-2016) and a brother Michael who
died an infant in 1958.
Marcia lived a humble life of integrity caring for
others. She had no need for her name
to be shouted out, and devoted her life to her
students and family. An honorable
woman, steadfast.
The compassionate care from the professionals at
River Hospital, Alexandria Bay, the entire 4th floor at Crouse Irving
Memorial Hospital, and nurses and volunteers at Jefferson County Hospice
was exceptional. A special thank you to Dr. He at
River Hospital, and Dr. Zaki Badawy at Crouse Irving Memorial.
Arrangements are with the Iseneker
Funeral Home. There are no calling
hours. A Mass of Christian burial
will be held on Monday, June 29th at 1 pm at St. Stephens Church in
Croghan, with burial in St. Stephen’s Cemetery. A luncheon will immediately follow at the
Croghan American Legion, all are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Marcia’s
name to the Croghan Free Library, P.O. Box 8, Croghan NY and Hospice of
Jefferson County, 1398 Gotham Street, Watertown NY.
