Turin, NY- The South
Lewis Central School District will hold their annual Budget Hearing meeting
on May 12, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. in the Board Room, to present the 2026-27
spending plan.
The proposed $35,009,478
budget for the 2026-2027 school year is a $3,172,346 (9.96 percent)
increase over the $31,837,132 approved for the current school year. The tax
levy, the amount to be collected through taxes, is proposed to increase by 2.79
percent ($273,340) from $9,797,138 to $10,070,478. This is within the
district’s allowed tax cap increase
calculated by New York State, meaning the budget vote will require a
simple majority of voters for approval.
The district’s
budget vote and Board of Education election will take place on Tuesday, May
19, from 12:00 p.m. to
8:00 p.m., in the
school auditorium.
There are four
candidates seeking three seats on the Board of Education (two five-year
terms and one one-year term). The candidates for the three
seats are incumbents Lucy Austin and Jessica Carpenter, along with Katie
Carpenter and Kristin Thomas. The candidates receiving the most and second
most votes will be elected to five-year terms, while the candidate
receiving the third most votes will be elected to the one-year term. More
information on the candidates can be viewed in the district’s Meet the
Candidates flyer here.
