CROGHAN- Howard A. Nortz, 99, formerly of
William Street, passed away early Monday morning May 25, 2026
at the Lewis County Residential Healthcare Facility, under the care of the
facility staff and Lewis County Hospice.
Howard is survived by his beloved wife, Catherine;
seven children, Vincent P. and Ann Nortz of Lowville, Michael and Becky
Nortz of Salem, CT, Mark and Christine Nortz of Gainesville, Fl, Joseph
Nortz of Indian Rocks Beach, FL, Anne Willer of Croghan, Stephen Nortz of
Macedon, Catherine and Jean St. Croix of Lowville; a sister-in-law, Louann
Nortz of Watertown; a special son who was an exchange student, who formed a
close bond with Howard, Jaime (Laura) Allegre de Cueto and their son, Jaime
of Torreon, Mexico; 17 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; several
nieces, nephews and cousins. He is
predeceased by a daughter-in-law, Diane Nortz; and four siblings, Francis
Nortz, Bernard Nortz, Thelma Nortz, and Florence Nortz.
Howard was born on May 22, 1927
at home in Croghan, NY and graduated from Father Leo Memorial School in
1944. He worked at E.M. Marilley’s
Store and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving during WWII. After he returned home, he worked for
Norbert Lhulliar at Saconey Gas Station for 6
years. After Norbert's death in 1953,
Howard took over the business with his partner Gil Monnat, serving Croghan
and neighboring communities for 40 years as Monnat & Nortz Service
Station. On September 3, 1955 he married Catherine Preston at St. Cecelia's
Catholic Church, Adams, with his cousin, Rev. Alfred Nortz, officiating. He was a communicant of St. Stephen's
Catholic Church in Croghan. Howard was
a volunteer for the Croghan Fire and Ambulance for over 30 years. He was a member of Beaver River Memorial
Post #1662 for 78 years, and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #2175
in Croghan. Howard enjoyed camping vacations with his family
and he enjoyed mowing the lawn. He
was an avid NY Giants fan. Howard
also served as treasurer for Croghan Businessman's Association,
and also served on the Lewis County Hospice board with his wife,
Catherine.
A funeral Mass
will be said at 10:00 a.m. on Friday May 29, 2026
at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Croghan, with Rev. Donald Manfred,
Pastor, officiating. Burial with
Military Honors will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery. Calling hours are from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.
on Thursday May 28, 2026 at Iseneker

made to the Croghan Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 405, Croghan, NY 13327 or to a
charity of one’s choice.
