LEWIS COUNTY HEALTH SYSTEM TO HOST EVACUATION TRAINING EXERCISE MAY 18

LOWVILLE, NY─ Monday, May 18, 2026, from 5:00pm–9:00pm, Lewis County General Hospital and Residential Health Care Facility, and related departments will conduct a full-scale evacuation exercise on the main campus in Lowville.

The exercise is based on a hypothetical emergency scenario requiring the evacuation of hospital departments and the residential health care facility, with students and volunteers role-playing as patients and residents. Participants will focus on safety, tracking, securely managing patients and residents, transportation logistics, and communications, all of which are important for continuity during an evacuation.

LCHS Emergency Preparedness Director Bobbi Kahl says, “The community should not be alarmed if they see an increased presence of law enforcement, fire, and emergency personnel on the main campus in Lowville, as they are participating in the training exercise. These practice exercises not only fulfill regulatory needs but give us a powerful opportunity to practice our response, find ways to improve, and ensure safe, effective procedures if a real emergency arises.”

Numerous local community partners will join the exercise, contributing their expertise and commitment: Lewis County Office of Emergency Management, New York State Troopers, Lewis County Sheriff’s Department, Lowville Police Department, Lowville VFW, Lewis County Search & Rescue, Lowville Fire Department, BOCES, LCGH Auxiliary volunteers, and New York State Department of Health.

“Safety is a shared responsibility. By practicing and strengthening our emergency plans with our community partners, we build our ability to respond when it matters most,” notes LCHS Chief Executive Officer Gerald R. Cayer.
