She was born on February 7, 1943 in Lowville to Elwin D. and Rosemary Kirschner Stanton and attended Lowville Academy, graduating in June 1961.  Janet was to attend nursing school starting in August when her mother passed on August 9th.  Being the oldest of 8 children with 4 of them age 4 and under (twins were 3 months old), Janet put her career on hold to stay home and help her father raise the younger children, which she did with much love and compassion and which the family is forever grateful for.  She later went on to attend Jefferson Community College obtaining an accounting degree.  Janet worked at DMV in Lowville for several years until her marriage to Ronald J. Sheldon in 1975. They made their home in Copenhagen.  Janet and Ron enjoyed many years together working in his construction business and for many local churches.  She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Lowville.  Janet loved to garden and preserve food.  She was very good at knitting and crocheting, making many very unique items.  Her and Ron were big fans of Fritz's Polka Band and attended many of their shows around the country.  She was also a guest lay minister at the Methodist church.

She is survived by 5 brothers, James (Valerie) Stanton of Florida, John (Trudy) Stanton of South Carolina, Thomas (Gloria) Stanton of Florida, Peter (Marilyn) Stanton of Florida, Paul (Dahlia) Stanton of Kentucky; two sisters, Dora Hankey of California and Shirley (Douglas) Pleskach of Lowville.  She is predeceased by her husband, Ronald, her mother, Rosemary and father, Elwin.

The family would like to thank the many employees who cared for Janet during her stay at Sunset Nursing Home, their kindness and compassion are greatly appreciated.

A funeral Service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday April 19, 2026 at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc. with Pastor Joyce Woodcock officiating.  Private burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Copenhagen.  A calling hour will be from Noon – 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, prior to the funeral service, at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Alzheimer's Association, P.O.
