Apprenticeships: Your Direct Route to Employment and a Skilled
Workforce with JCC Workforce Solutions
Watertown, N.Y. – In
recognition of National Apprenticeship Week, Jefferson Community College
(JCC) is highlighting its efforts to expand pathways to high-demand careers
through participation in the SUNY Apprenticeship Program, a statewide
initiative designed to meet New York’s evolving workforce needs.
Through the SUNY
Apprenticeship Program, Jefferson partners with regional employers to
deliver registered apprenticeships that combine paid, on-the-job training
with related classroom instruction. Apprentices gain hands-on experience
while earning industry-recognized credentials and working toward a college
certificate or degree, often with little to no student debt. Employers
participating in the apprenticeship program benefit from customized
training solutions that help upskill current employees, improve retention,
and prepare for future workforce demands. Studies show apprenticeship
programs can deliver a strong return on investment, averaging $1.47 for
every dollar invested.
Registered
apprenticeships are approved and overseen by the New York State Department
of Labor, ensuring consistent, high-quality training aligned with industry
standards.
Joanna Brislan,
Director of Military Enrollment and Workforce Solutions, says,
“Apprenticeships are one of the most effective ways to connect education
with real-world workforce needs. Through our partnership with SUNY and
local employers, we are helping individuals earn while they learn, while
also building a strong talent pipeline that supports economic growth across
the North Country.”
President Daniel
J. Dupee, II, says, “Jefferson is committed to creating innovative,
accessible pathways that lead directly to meaningful careers. The SUNY
Apprenticeship Program exemplifies how community colleges can partner with
industry to address workforce shortages, strengthen local businesses, and
provide residents with opportunities to succeed right here in our region.”
Carrie Pruett,
Center Director of Little Lukes Preschool in Pulaski, says, “Jefferson
Workforce Solutions provided clear guidance and hands-on support educating
our staff and managers at every step of the registered apprenticeship
process. Their assistance made it easy for us to participate in a program
that supports attracting and retaining high-quality staff for our inclusive
preschool program and other local daycare providers.”
The college
supports apprenticeship opportunities across a wide range of industries,
including advanced manufacturing, healthcare, teaching and education,
information technology, digital and creative imaging, agriculture,
hospitality, and business services. Apprentices typically complete a
combination of at least 2,000 hours of supervised on-the-job training
annually and more than 144 hours of classroom instruction, with programs
ranging from one to six years depending on the occupation.
Whether you're an
employer looking to build a skilled workforce or an individual ready to
launch a career, Jefferson encourages you to explore how apprenticeship
opportunities can support career growth and workforce development across
the region. Apprentices must be a minimum of 18 years old or have parental
consent, have their high school diploma or equivalent, and meet program
guidelines.
