State Police Investigate Homicides and
Officer-Involved Shooting in Lewis County

On March 27,
2026, at approximately 4:49 p.m., New York State Police in Carthage
responded to 7601 Alpine Road in the town of Diana for a reported trespass.
A preliminary
investigation determined that a homeowner, who was not at the residence,
observed an individual on their property via a security camera. The
individual appeared to be armed with a long gun and subsequently left the
area. The homeowner contacted law enforcement.
While responding,
troopers located a burned vehicle nearby containing remains of a deceased
individual. A second burned vehicle was later located in the vicinity, also
containing remains of a deceased individual.
The investigation
led troopers to a nearby residence on Alpine Road, where a perimeter was
established. Additional State Police resources responded to the scene.
During the
incident, the suspect exited the residence armed with a long gun and fired
at law enforcement. At that time, a member of the New York State Police
discharged their division-issued firearm, striking the suspect.
Troopers
immediately rendered aid. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The New York
State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Major Crimes Unit are
continuing the investigation in conjunction with the New York State
Attorney General’s Office.
The New York
State Police were assisted by the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, New York
State Department of Environmental Conservation, Natural Bridge Ambulance,
Lewis County Search & Rescue, and Harrisville Fire Department.
There is no known
threat to the public. The investigation remains ongoing.
