State Police Investigating Homicides and
Officer-Involved Shooting in Lewis County

The suspect
involved in the officer-involved shooting has been identified as Victor
L. Craighead, age 47, of Harrisville, New York.
During the
incident, the suspect exited his residence located at 7654 Alpine Road
armed with a long gun and fired at law enforcement. A member of the New
York State Police discharged their division-issued firearm, striking the
suspect.
The Trooper who
discharged his firearm has been identified as Trooper Timothy Dovi.
Trooper Dovi has been a member of the New York State Police for more than
nine years and is assigned to the Special
Operations Response Team. He is currently on critical incident leave.
Multiple
body-worn cameras captured the incident. The footage is not being released at this time due to the ongoing
investigation.
Autopsies related
to the initial homicide investigation are scheduled to be conducted today
at the Broome County Medical Examiner’s Office in Binghamton. Positive
identification of the deceased individuals is pending confirmation by the
Medical Examiner’s Office.
This
investigation remains ongoing.

State Police Investigate Homicides and
Officer-Involved Shooting in Lewis County

On March 27,
2026, at approximately 4:49 p.m., New York State Police in Carthage
responded to 7601 Alpine Road in the town of Diana for a reported trespass.
A preliminary
investigation determined that a homeowner, who was not at the residence,
observed an individual on their property via a security camera. The
individual appeared to be armed with a long gun and subsequently left the
area. The homeowner contacted law enforcement.
While responding,
troopers located a burned vehicle nearby containing remains of a deceased
individual. A second burned vehicle was later located in the vicinity, also
containing remains of a deceased individual.
The investigation
led troopers to a nearby residence on Alpine Road, where a perimeter was
established. Additional State Police resources responded to the scene.
During the
incident, the suspect exited the residence armed with a long gun and fired
at law enforcement. At that time, a member of the New York State Police
discharged their division-issued firearm, striking the suspect.
Troopers
immediately rendered aid. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The New York
State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Major Crimes Unit are
continuing the investigation in conjunction with the New York State
Attorney General’s Office.
The New York
State Police were assisted by the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, New York
State Department of Environmental Conservation, Natural Bridge Ambulance,
Lewis County Search & Rescue, and Harrisville Fire Department.
There is no known
threat to the public. The investigation remains ongoing.
