PORT LEYDEN- John M. Compo,
73, longtime resident of North Street, passed away Tuesday morning, January
27, 2026 at his home with his loving family by his
side.
He was born on
June 8, 1952 in Constableville, a son of the late
David and Patricia Doster Compo. John graduated from South Lewis
Central School and was drafted into the United States Army, serving from
1972 to 1974. After his honorable discharge, John worked
construction with his father and brother for a short time along with
painting water towers. He then went to work at Burrows Papermill in
Lyonsdale as a laborer, a job he retired from after 40+ years.
John enjoyed
hunting, fishing, train layouts, his dog King, and riding fourwheeler. He loved spending time at the family camp,
especially with his brother David whom he did everything with. John
could often be found at camp working at the sawmill he built, clearing new
trails with his tractor that he enjoyed driving, or
working on any projects that came about. He was a jack
of all trades, self-sufficient, and always kept himself busy. He even built
his home on North Street himself. John was very adamant about
teaching his children as much as he could, including how to drive stick
shift at a young age on the road into the family camp. He loved
gardening and tending to his orchard where he grew a variety of fruits and
vegetables, often canning many of them. John also loved producing
maple syrup and maple syrup candies, winning awards for his high quality products.
He is survived by
three children, Melissa Compo, Jennifer (Brad) Barnes, and John (Trish
O’Donnell) Compo; his beloved sheltie dog, King Compo; a very special,
kind, compassionate, and caring girlfriend, Lynda Crofoot; seven
grandchildren, Max, Kaitlyn, Tyler, Halley, Jonathan, Mattie and Abigail;
two sisters, Susan Durant and Margaret Compo; one sister-in-law, Lois
Compo; and one niece and two nephews, Heidi, Paul, and David.
John was
predeceased by his wife, Cathy Compo and one brother, David Compo.
