A war veteran, he was drafted into the US Army at the age of 18 in March, 1953, and deployed to Korea and Germany where he served before being honorably discharged after 2 years of service in March, 1955. He was the first in Lewis County to be pinned as part of the “We  Honor Veterans” program which is part of a national program to provide veterans receiving hospice care to share their life’s story and be personally recognized for their service.

He married Marjory Ann Briot on May 21, 1955 in St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan with the Rev. Louis Hamm, OFM, officiating. Mrs. Schindler died earlier this year on May 25, 2025.

Following his military service, he worked in the Veneer Plant at AMF in Lowville for 5 years before going to work for Louis Bush and Son’s Feed Mill, also in Lowville for almost 12 years. In 1972, he took a position with Pajco (Payne Jones, Inc.) Paper Manufacturing Company in Lowville until he retired in 1994 after 22 years of service.

He was a communicant of St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, and a former communicant of St. Peter’s Church, in New Bremen, and was a proud life member of the Lowville VFW Post 6912.

Throughout his life, he took great pleasure in going to his deceased son, Tim’s Go-Cart racing in Evans Mills, vegetable gardening, attending grandchildren’s ballgames, and particularly traveling to Nashville, Atlantic City and Branson, Missouri with his wife.

Surviving are three children, Thomas C. Schindler, at home, Debra A. (Robert) Lyndaker, of TN, and Tammy M. (Jeff) Edick, of Castorland; eight grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.
