Michael E.
Stewart “Stewy”, 68, of Turin, New York, son of
Fred and Charlotte Stewart of Watson, tragically passed away at his home on
September 12th 2025. Mike was born in
Lowville on December 24th 1956.
He graduated from Lowville
Academy and Central School in 1975. He married Sharon
Boshart of Turin
in 1982 where they built a house, had two children and spent 43 years
together. Mike spent his early working years at Whetstone State Park
as a lifeguard then he worked for VS Virkler and Sons, Suburban Propane and
Bush’s Fuel as a delivery driver. He then began his 25
year career in New York State Corrections and Community Supervision
from which he retired in 2014.
“Stewy” loved sports and was an outstanding athlete.
Mike played football, wrestled and baseball during his school years As a senior in high school he was champion in the 155 pound weight class in the Central Oneida League
Tournament, Tri Valley League Tournament, Frontier League Tournament where
he was crowned CO-Most Outstanding Wrestler, Section III Class B Tournament
and Section III Interclass
Tournament. Mike finished his high school wrestling career with a 33-2
record along with being one of the captains of that undefeated wrestling
team. He continued with his love of wrestling by officiating at all high
school levels for at least 20 years, and his love of football continued by
playing in the Watertown Rough Touch League where he won “Most Outstanding
Athlete” etc. Mike played fast pitch
softball for 35 years and during that time,
accumulated far more accolades than we can count. Through the years, he
played for many teams but the local ones were Bakers’ of Lowville, The Central Hotel of Glenfield, and
finally Memories, in Watson. From second base, “Stewy”
had the skill to engage in any play, and was a
fierce opponent from the field to the batter’s box. He competed in five
Men’s ASA National Tournaments but in Aurora Colorado in 2000 while playing
for McKie’s, they brought home the Class C National Championship. When Mike
wore a jersey for any team, he wore it with pride and dedication to the
game.
Throughout his
career in Corrections, while playing fast pitch, Mike also competed in the
“State of New York Police
Olympics” where he won, once again, many
accolades over the years from 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1997.
Besides sports,
he was also very committed to his family. Mike is predeceased by his
parents, Fred and Charlotte Stewart of Watson. His siblings are Pam
Birchenough and her husband Jim, Charlie and Patty Stewart, Pat and Jane
Martin, Claude Stewart and his partner Marylou Guignard and many nieces and
nephews. He has two sons, Derek and wife Wendy, and Collin and wife Karly. He also has two grandchildren, Jonathan
and Kellie and grandpets, Quincy, Paisley
and Aspen.
After retirement
from work and sports he loved hunting, cooking and helping his family with chicken
barbecues, pet sitting, mowing and plowing snow, etc. The Stewart family
would like to extend our greatest thanks and appreciation to all the
dedicated, professional and compassionate first responders that assisted us
through this difficult time. In lieu of flowers please make
a donation to the Turin Volunteer Fire Department in Michael’s
name. A Celebration of Life will be
held in the future.
