The funeral will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday September 30, 2025 at First Presbyterian Church, Lowville with Pastor Greg Jenkins, officiating.  Burial will follow in Castorland Union Cemetery.  Calling hours are 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday September 29, 2025 at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Brookside Senior Living Community Benevolent Fund, 5701 Brookside Circle, Lowville, NY 13367 or Lewis County Search and Rescue, 7782 West State Street, Lowville, NY 13367.

 

Lucille was born April 28, 1923 in the Town of Denmark, the daughter of Augustus and Julia Stoffel Schantz.  She graduated from Lowville Academy in the class of 1939 and from the House of the Good Samaritan Hospital in 1943.   On September 22, 1945, she married Donald F. Sauter at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Croghan.  Lucille worked for Lewis County General Hospital as a Registered Nurse from 1943 until 1978.  Together with her husband, they owned and operated a dairy farm on State Route 26 between Lowville and Carthage for 28 years.  In 1970 they started to develop Happy Hollow Campground on part of the farm.  The couple finished developing it in 1977 with 172 camping sites and other recreational facilities. They sold the campground in 1981 but were forced to reclaim it in 1983, and sold it again in 1984.  Lucille worked at the Lewis County Courthouse as a court attendant from 1992 until 2010.

 

Mrs. Sauter attended First Presbyterian Church, Lowville.  She was a lifetime member of Castorland Baptist Church, where she served as Deacon, Treasurer, and President of the Women’s Society.  Lucille served on the Board of Directors for Lewis County Cooperative Extension for three years, was a member of the Karcher Kohler American Legion Post 850 Auxiliary, Castorland, A member of Lewis County General Hospital Auxiliary, and a life member of Denmark Grange.  

 

Lucille and Don wintered in Auburndale, Florida from 1986 – 1996.  She enjoyed sewing, knitting, gardening, traveling and watching the NY Yankees.  Lucille enjoyed her friends and the activities at Brookside Senior Living Community, where she lived for eleven years.  Lucille said “It was a great life, and the Lord took good care of us.”

 

She is survived by two daughters, Donna Lou Diller of Castorland; Kay Laribee (Mary Lou DeMinck) of Lowville; a son, Alan Sauter (Tina) of Addison; an exchange student, Jane Gillam (Stewart) of Atwell, Australia; a sister-in-law, Shirley Sauter of Watertown; nine grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandson; and nieces, nephews and cousins.  Lucille was predeceased by her husband, Donald, in 2014; a son-in-law, Richard Diller; and three sisters, Edith Lacy, Ione Couch, and Ivah Sabo.
