AI-generated content may be incorrect.CROGHAN – Alvin Steria, Jr., 81, of Erie Canal Road, passed away on Thursday, August 7, 2025 at Samaritan Keep Home, Watertown.

 

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 11, 2025 at Croghan Mennonite Church with Pastors Paul Mast and Bruce Roggie officiating.  Burial will be in Croghan Mennonite Cemetery.  There are no calling hours.  Contributions in his memory may be made to Croghan Mennonite Church, PO Box 68, Croghan, NY  13327 or Alzheimer’s Association, 5015 Campuswood Drive, Suite 102, East Syracuse, NY 13057.

 

He is survived by three children, James E. Steria of Croghan; Dawn and Alan Jantzi of Croghan; Sheryl and Stephen Virkler of Castorland; six grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; his siblings, Donald Steria of Lowville; Robert and Lillian Steria of Croghan; a sister-in-law, Savilla Steria of Lowville; several nieces, nephews and cousins.  He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Doris; a sister, Helen Steria; and a brother, Rev. Gilbert Steria.

 

Alvin was born on May 4, 1944, a son of the late Alvin Sr. and Laura Roggie Steria.   He attended country school on the Erie Canal Road.  On September 14, 1968, he married Doris Marie Roggie at Lowville Mennonite Church with Rev. Lloyd Boshart officiating. Alvin took over the family farm in the late 1970s, and together with his wife owned and operated the farm for many years until their retirement.  The family was also maple sugar producers for many years. 

 

Alvin was a member of Croghan Mennonite Church, where he was a youth sponsor and car parker.  He enjoyed keeping busy, playing softball as a pitcher in his younger years.  Alvin enjoyed the outdoors, cutting wood, gardening and hunting.
