Help Out Local Animal Shelters at Development
Authority Open House August 28
Bring clean,
unwanted towels and small blankets to the Development Authority of the
North Country’s Open House at the regional landfill in Rodman August 28
from 4-6 p.m. where they will be distributed to local animal shelters. This
is a great “reuse” opportunity and diverts waste from the landfill in
addition to helping out local animal care
facilities.
Towels can be
faded or stained, but please make sure they are clean. Small, clean
blankets will also be accepted. Everything collected will be distributed
among animal shelters in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties.
In addition, unwanted
hardcover books will be accepted at the event and will be recycled rather
than disposed of in the trash. Paperback books can be recycled with your
typical paper/cardboard recycling, but hardcover books must be de-bound
first, so the pages can be recycled. At the Authority’s last open house,
many people who brought books to be recycled ended up finding interesting
books to take home as well, so this year the books will be spread out on
tables for easier browsing. The Authority works in partnership with the
Northern New York Library System to recycle hardcover books.
While you’re at
the landfill, you can take a bus tour of the facility to see what happens
to your trash after it’s picked up at the curb. In addition, exhibits and
displays will showcase the Authority’s work in economic development,
wastewater plant operations, the evolution and future of the broadband
network, recycling education initiatives, GIS drone technology and much
more! The Development Authority is celebrating 40 years of serving North
Country communities!
