Open House at Regional Landfill August 28

Recycle or exchange unwanted hardcover books, and help out local animal shelters at the Development Authority of the North Country’s open house at the regional Materials Management Facility in Rodman on August 28 from 4-6 p.m. Help the Development Authority celebrate 40 years of serving North Country communities!

Visitors can take guided bus tours of the landfill and learn what happens to their waste after they put it out by the curb or take it to a transfer station. Guests will also learn about the many other services the Authority provides to North Country communities, in addition to operating the regional landfill. Exhibits and displays will feature the economic development work the Authority does, wastewater plant operation staff provides for municipalities, the history and future of the Authority’s broadband network, recycling education, GIS drone work and much more.

During the last open house when hardcover books were collected for recycling, so many visitors combed through the books looking for treasures, this year’s event will be a book “exchange!” Bring some books you no longer want and take some new titles home! This recycling/exchange event is for hardcover books only. Paperback books may already be included with your normal recycling items, but hardcover books typically must be disposed of in the landfill as waste. The Authority works in partnership with the Northern New York Library System to recycle hardcover books.

In another opportunity to help divert reusable items from the landfill, visitors are invited to bring unwanted, clean towels and small blankets to the open house and they will be donated to regional animal shelters.
