Tug Hill Artisan Roasters Brews Up Excitement with
New Café Grand Opening
LOWVILLE, NY— Tug Hill
Artisan Roasters is excited to announce the grand opening of its new café,
located at 7514 S. State Street, Lowville, NY 13367, in the heart of the
Village of Lowville. The public is invited to attend the ribbon-cutting
ceremony and open house celebration on Friday, July 11, at 9:00 a.m.,
marking an exciting new chapter for the business and a continued investment
in downtown revitalization.
The café will
operate under Saint Drogo’s Coffee and Bakehouse, a DBA of Tug Hill Artisan
Roasters, offering more than just exceptional coffee. The bakehouse
specializes in European-style laminated dough pastries, including
croissants, pain au chocolat, and other artisan
baked goods that set it apart from traditional cafés. This expansion
reflects the company’s broader mission to elevate the region’s food and
beverage scene through craft, quality, and community.
The opening of
the café was made possible in part through the Restore NY Communities
Initiative and the New York Main Street Program, two funding programs
administered by Empire State Development and New York State Homes and
Community Renewal. These programs have been instrumental in supporting the
rehabilitation of underutilized properties and enhancing the economic
vitality of rural communities across New York State. The Lewis County
Planning and Community Development Department provided critical assistance
in procuring and administering these grant funds, helping to make this
project a reality. Additionally, the Development Authority of the North
Country provided crucial short-term lending support, enabling the timely
progression of the project.
The café now
occupies a rehabilitated historic structure that once served as the Lewis
County Jail and Sheriff’s Residence, a long-vacant and blighted property
that had fallen into disrepair. Through a thoughtful restoration process,
Tug Hill Artisan Roasters has breathed new life into this piece of local
history, transforming it into a welcoming and vibrant space that celebrates
both the past and future of the village. The project exemplifies how
adaptive reuse can preserve community character while supporting small
business development and downtown revitalization.
In addition to
the café, visitors can view the on-site French bakery and artisan coffee
roastery, where fresh pastries and small-batch
roasted coffees are prepared daily. For a truly unique experience, the
building also features two short-term rental apartments located in the
former jail cells upstairs, offering guests a one-of-a-kind stay steeped in
history.
The newly opened
café features an outdoor patio for customers to enjoy coffee al fresco, and
ample parking is available behind the building, making it easily accessible
for patrons. The cozy, community-focused space is designed to serve as both
a daily stop for locals and a destination for visitors exploring the
region.
“We’re thrilled
to open our doors in Lowville and share this space with our community,” said
Scott Gilbert, owner of Tug Hill Artisan Roasters. “This project has been a
true labor of love, and we’re incredibly grateful for the funding support
and the many local partners who helped bring it to life.”
Visitors to the
grand opening will enjoy complimentary samples of Tug Hill Artisan
Roasters' specialty coffees, mini cream cheese danishes
from Saint Drogo’s Bakehouse, and samples of the café’s signature crepes.
Tours of the café and roastery will run throughout the day from 9:00 a.m.
to 1:00 p.m., offering a fun and flavorful look behind the scenes of
this exciting new venture.
Tug Hill Artisan
Roasters and Saint Drogo’s Coffee and Bakehouse are proud to be part of the
economic and cultural resurgence of the Village of Lowville and look
forward to becoming a daily stop for great coffee, delicious pastries, and
meaningful community connection.
