LOWVILLE – Gordon H. “Gordie”
Allen, 86, of Bluebird Lane, passed away on Sunday, July 27, 2025 after a short stay at Lewis County Health System
Hospital.
Calling hours will
be held on Friday, August 1, 2025 from 3:00 – 7:00
p.m. at Iseneker Funeral Home, 5702 Waters Road,
Lowville. A funeral Mass will be
said at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 2, 2025 at
St. Peter’s Catholic Church, with Rev. Sony G. Pulickal,
Pastor, officiating. Burial will
follow in Lowville Rural Cemetery. A
luncheon at the Marine Corps League will immediately follow the graveside
service, all are welcome. In lieu of
flowers, contributions may be made to the Lowville Food Pantry, 5502
Trinity Ave., Lowville, NY 13367.
He is survived by
his wife of nearly 62 years, Elizabeth; four children, Sara (Mark) Brooker
of Lowville; Teresa “Terry” Allen of Lowville; Amy (Jim) Rhodes of Cape
Vincent; Chris (Amy) Allen of Mechanicsville, VA; six grandchildren,
Kaitlyn (Shane) Summerfield, Connor (Kaylee) Rhodes, Jade Rhodes, Olivia
Brooker, Cole Brooker, and Samantha Allen; four great-grandchildren, Colt
Summerfield, Haydn Summerfield, Rosalee Rhodes and Stella Rhodes; nieces,
nephews and cousins. He is
predeceased by two brothers, Charles and Richard Allen.
Gordon was born
on December 11, 1938 in Lowville, NY, a son of the
late Gerald and Anna Hewitt Allen. He
graduated from Lowville Academy with the class of 1957 and earned his Bachelor’s Degree at St. Bonaventure University in
Olean, NY. Gordon served in the
United States Army and in the Army Reserves. On August 17, 1963, he married Elizabeth
Anne Mattis at St. Peter’s Church in Lowville, with Monsignor John Cotter
officiating. Gordon worked for Moore
Business Forms in Utica, as a manager at Rossdale’s, and at BOCES before
going to work at the Lowville Journal and Republican, retiring as Editor in
1999 after over 25 years of service.
Gordon was a
communicant of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, where he served as Eucharistic
Minister. He was a member of Lewis
County Search and Rescue for five years, and was
very proud of his service with them.
There was an award named after him, the Gordie Allen Award, given to
the staff person who made the biggest non-medical screw up through the
year. He was very involved with the
Pratt-Northam Foundation. Gordon was
a Life Member of B.P.O.E 1605, Lowville Lodge, a member of the Brookside
Senior Living Community Board of Directors, a member of the Lowville Rural
Cemetery Board of Directors, and served on the
Board of Directors of Friends of Lewis County Hospice.
Gordie loved his
community and enjoyed being an active participant in helping to form it
into what it is today. There was no
part of it that didn’t interest him.
He was a strong advocate for the leave a legacy and encouraged all
to become involved both with the community and to form bonds within their
own families. Ultimately
he was a fantastic husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly
missed by all who knew him.
