AI-generated content may be incorrect.CROGHAN, NY- Harry James Mitchell, 93, of Steiner Rd., Croghan, retired Niagara Mohawk employee, died on Thursday, June 5, 2025 at Lewis County General Hospital, Lowville.

 

Born in Black River, NY on May 6, 1932, a son of Charles E. and Nora V. (Frost) Mitchell, he was a 1949 graduate of Beaver River Central School. Following high school, he worked for the former Hoffman & Dudo Cheese Plant, and, for Lehman and Zehr Lumber Company, both in Croghan.

 

A Korean War veteran, he entered the US Army in November, 1952 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, served as an Artillery Surveyor during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged in November, 1953.

 

He was united in marriage to Donna G. Waterman on August 14, 1954 in Beaver Falls United Methodist Church in Beaver Falls.  Mrs. Mitchell died on November 13, 2012.

 

In 1954, following in his father’s footsteps, he became the Caretaker Operator of the Effley Falls and Elmer Falls Niagara Mohawk Hydro Plants in Belfort.  In 1960, he was transferred to Watertown where he worked as a Traveling Operator for NiMo and resided in Adams Center. In 1967, he moved to Baldwinsville after being promoted by the company to Power Control Dispatcher working out of Syracuse. He eventually became an Assistant Operator buying electricity from many sources when loads by the power company were at their highest. He retired as a Shift Supervisor in 1989 after 35 years of service and moved back to Croghan.

 

One of the most satisfying periods of Harry’s life was when he was traveling by RV and motor home with his wife and family throughout the continental United States, including Alaska and Hawaii, and in 1988 when they visited Australia and New Zealand.

 

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Beaver Falls, and was a member of the Beaver River Memorial Post 1663 American Legion in Croghan.

 

Surviving are his children, daughter Bambi L. (Rex) Niles, of Oneida, NY, and his son, Charles D. Mitchell and his fiancée, Summer Stevens, of Fayetteville, NC; seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren, his special niece, Shelia W. Collinsgru, of Croghan, and nieces and nephews.

 

In addition to his loving wife, Donna, of 58 years, he was predeceased by two daughters, Mindy when she was a young child, and Terri Lee Mitchell, who died in 2011; two brothers, Norman J. and Stanley C. Mitchell, and two sisters, Maxine Moore and Norma Mitchell.

 

A Graveside Committal Service with military honors for Harry will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. in Gospel Hall Cemetery in Belfort.

 

In keeping with Harry’s wishes there will be no calling hours.

 

Memorial donations may be made to Beaver Falls United Methodist Church.
