Launch Your Business in Just 4
Months
Jefferson
Community College’s (JCC) home-based childcare training program is
now offering rolling admission — start anytime! This free program
is available to residents of Jefferson and Lewis counties and prepares
participants to open their own home-based childcare business in
as-little-as four months.
Jefferson’s
training provides essential business and education knowledge, along with
support for obtaining New York State Office of Children and Family Services
(NYSOCFS) licensing and business counseling. Participants complete 34 hours
of non-credit instruction in business and health/safety requirements.
Start-up supply funding may be available for eligible individuals through
Community Action Planning Council (CAPC) or Naturally Lewis, depending on
the county of residence.
Participants will
receive comprehensive support throughout the program, including
personalized mentorship from a dedicated Program Coordinator, one-on-one
business counseling from a Small Business Development Center (SBDC)
advisor, and regulatory guidance from a CAPC representative to assist with
NYSOCFS approval.
“This is a
no-cost, no-pressure opportunity for anyone who’s ever dreamed of working
with children to take that first step,” says Joanna Brislan, Director of
Community Services at Jefferson. “You don’t need prior experience—just a
love for kids and a desire to build a better future. In just a few months,
you could be running your own licensed childcare business from home,
earning income while making a meaningful impact in your community.”
Originally
launched in June 2021 to help address the region’s shortage of childcare
options, Jefferson’s program has already supported the creation of 64 local
childcare slots. The initiative’s success inspired its replication in
February 2023 by neighboring counties through a partnership that includes
Jefferson, Oswego County, Integrated Community Planning of Oswego County,
the Small Business Development Center, and Oswego County Workforce New
York.
Home-based
childcare training is made possible through a partnership between JCC,
CAPC, and the NYS SBDC, with generous support from the Jefferson County
Local Development Corporation.
