Development Authority Honors Two Housing Advocates

At its May 29 meeting, the Board of Directors of the Development Authority of the North Country recognized two community members for over 30 years of work to improve housing in the region.

Bruce Armstrong and Kent Burto have served on the Administrative Board of the North Country HOME Consortium since its inception in 1993. The consortium was created to assist municipalities in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties in improving their housing stock. The Development Authority of the North Country administers the funding on behalf of the consortium.

HOME is a federal HUD program that provides funding for owner-occupied rehabilitation, rental housing new construction and rehabilitation, homebuyer assistance, and tenant based rental assistance for eligible households. The first HUD funds were received by the North Country HOME Consortium in 1994. Since then, the consortium has received a total of $34,707,101 which has assisted over 2,008 housing units.

Armstrong and Burto have played active roles in reviewing applications and making funding recommendations for more than 30 years. The Development Authority’s Board of Directors passed a resolution recognizing them for their dedication to the improvement of North Country housing.
