United Way Announces New Grant Opportunity Honoring Renee Beyer’s Legacy in Lewis County

United Way of Northern New York (UWNNY) is proud to announce a new grant opportunity for nonprofit organizations serving Lewis County. The Renee Beyer Community Development Fund, established at the Northern New York Community Foundation, celebrates the life and legacy of Renee Beyer, a beloved public servant, civic volunteer, and community champion who made a lasting impact across the North Country.

Originally introduced in 2013 following her tragic passing, the fund was created in Renee’s memory to support local nonprofits in the county she so deeply loved. Renee served as Lewis County’s senior planner, was a graduate of the inaugural Lewis County Leadership Academy and gave generously of her time to organizations including Hand in Hand Early Childcare Center, Double Play Sports, and youth soccer.

Today, thanks to the generosity of the Lewis County community and the ongoing partnership with the Northern New York Community Foundation, the fund has grown to a point where it can begin fulfilling its original purpose: to empower community-led initiatives in Lewis County through targeted grantmaking.

A total of $8,500 in funding is now available through this competitive grant opportunity. Grants of up to $5,000 will be awarded to projects that reflect the values Renee championed:

·      Community development and revitalization

·      Grassroots leadership and civic engagement

·      Strengthening neighbor-to-neighbor connections

·      Enhancing the quality of life for Lewis County residents

“Renee believed deeply in the power of local action and compassion,” said Dawn Cole, President & CEO of UWNNY. “Through this fund, we are honored to continue the work she cared so much about, investing in the people and organizations that make Lewis County stronger.”

Eligible applicants must be 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations serving Lewis County. Preference will be given to smaller, grassroots organizations with annual budgets under $1 million. The application portal opens May 9, 2025, and the deadline to apply is June 16, 2025, at 11:59 PM. Grants will be awarded in September 2025.
