“The goal of this project is to protect 55 private wells within 4,000 feet of the town’s salt pile. Also, it will protect the Deer River, which feeds the Black River, which is a main water source for the City of Watertown,” said Town Supervisor Scott Doyle.

The final cost of the project, built by Hybrid Building Solutions out of Corfu NY, was $640,385- coming in far less than the original estimated cost of $828,775.

The project started in July of 2023, with the Town working in conjunction with Tug Hill Commission personnel. The Tug Hill Commission submitted the WQIP Grant on behalf of the town that covered 75% of the total project cost. The Town Highway Department Employees completed more than $68,649 of work as part of Denmark’s local match. This included the base work, digging the footers, completing the electrical work, along with equipment, trucking and assisting with the paving. The remaining balance of the Town’s portion, $91,447, will be paid by the Town’s fund balance rather than increasing taxpayer cost by financing the remaining balance.

Supervisor Doyle expressed the Board’s sincere thanks to Highway Superintendent Patrick Mahar & Denmark Highway Employee’s, Lynn Henry, Jeff Snyder, Richard Frizzell, Dylan Smith and Andrew Pledger. He wishes to also thank Lewis County Highway personnel & neighboring towns who helped with shared services throughout the project, Tug Hill Commission personnel for assisting with the grant writing and lastly, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation for awarding the Town of Denmark the WQIP Grant.
