Society, P.O. Box 682, Lowville, NY 13367.
She is survived
by her nieces and nephews, Carrie S. Martin of Gloucester, MA; Steven C.
(Andrea) Martin of Lowville; and Douglas J. Martin (William Clark III) of
New York, NY; a great niece, Cailey Martin of Buffalo; a great nephew,
Joseph Martin of Alfred; and many cousins and great friends. She was predeceased by a brother Dorrance
“Skip” Martin, and a sister-in-law, Anne Martin.
Dolores was born
on December 21, 1935 in the town of Denmark, a
daughter of the late Christian and Selma Mellnitz
Martin. She graduated from Beaver
River Central School with the class of 1953 and went on to Goshen College
in Goshen, Indiana, graduating with a degree in social work. Dolores lived in many places, including
Mansfield, OH, Honolulu, HI, Rumford, ME, Los Fresnos, TX and several
stints here in Lowville. Overcoming a challenging hearing loss, she built
deep friendships in each place with many people, several of whom she was
still in touch with at the time of her passing.
After retiring at
age 70 from the Boise Cascade paper mill in Rumford, ME Dolores hit the
road to RV full-time in her Sunnybrook Roadrunner 5th wheel
camper and Ford F250. Her constant
canine companions on that 10-year camping adventure were Widget, then Sky, then
Nugget, and finally Brandy. In 2015 Dolores settled down at her brother
Skip’s “River House” on Waters Road to help care for the property and be
with family. There she watched the river, listened to the rain, fed the hummingbirds
and shoveled snow until entering Lewis County Residential Healthcare
Facility in May ’24. Dolores’s beloved yorkie puppy Shadow helped that transition with frequent visits, faithfully
facilitated by nephew Steve and his wife Andrea.
Dolores lived a
life of gratitude and contentment, always giving thanks to God for the way
he took care of her on all her journeys. She enjoyed her dogs, her camping trips, the
ocean, her lighthouse collection, her Chrysler Lebaron convertible and her
book of poetry “Alters Under the Sky.” Above all Dolores valued sharing
life with family and friends, often involving an early morning cup of
coffee, a “happy hour” glass of wine, or a maple ice cream cone. She zealously tracked the activities of
her niece, nephews, great niece, and great nephew and delighted in every
one of their visits. Dolores will be greatly missed but her legacy of love and
resilience is a gift we will all take with us.
She attended
First Mennonite Church, New Bremen.
