Free Unwanted Paint Collections for Lewis County
Residents
Lewis County
residents will have the opportunity to recycle unwanted or leftover paint
at a free monthly collection offered by Lewis County and PaintCare, a non-profit recycling organization. The
Development Authority of the North Country is assisting with the
coordination of the effort.
The take-back
collections will be held from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of
the month (beginning April 17) throughout the spring, summer and fall at
the Lewis County Transfer Site, 7952 NYS Route 26, Lowville. Residents will
no longer have to wait for a Household Hazardous Waste collection event to
safely dispose of their unused paint.
The following
coatings will be accepted at these PaintCare events,
in five-gallon containers or less:
·
Interior and exterior latex, acrylic, water-based,
alkyd, oil-based or enamel coatings
·
Deck coatings and floor paints
·
Primers, sealers, undercoaters
·
Stains
·
Shellacs, lacquers, varnishes, single-component
urethanes.
·
Waterproofing concrete/masonry/wood sealers and
repellants (not tar or bitumen-based)
·
Metal coatings, rust preventatives
·
Field and lawn paints
Paints must be in
their original, sealed container with their original labels.
These collections
are for residents only. Businesses can reach out to PaintCare
directly to arrange for a large-scale pickup of over 100 gallons. For more
information, see https://www.northcountryrecycles.org/PaintCare.
The collected
paint will be picked up by PaintCare, a national
organization that will then donate the leftover material, recycle it, or
use it in landscaping materials (pavers, flower pots)
or cement/asphalt blends, or as fuel for cement kilns and incinerators.
