DEER RIVER/NUMBER FOUR/LOWVILLE- Peter Jonathan
Miller (March 17, 1941 - April 10, 2025) Son of George Elmer Miller and
Frances “Frisky” Josephine Miller of Deer River, NY. Born during such a snow storm that it took his father three days to get to
the Lewis County General Hospital, even with his company “Miller Motor
Lines” trucks. Pete began school in the first grade at age 4 at the one
room schoolhouse in Deer River with no running water and wood/coal heat. He
attended Lowville Academy for 7th and 8th grade, then transferred to
Carthage Central School where he graduated with the class of 1958.
He joined the US
Air Force where he attended training for 43 weeks in Radio and Radar Tech
Systems in Biloxi, Mississippi. He was then stationed in Bismarck, North
Dakota as a radar specialist until discharged. Pete then attended Paul
Smith’s college to study forestry and was hired by Bob Lewis Tree Company
in Syracuse (later bought by Monroe) as a tree climber after college. He
did construction for several years, was an ironworker for Standard Bridge
Corp and Rome Iron Mills for about 6 years.
He was employed
by Lewis Tree Company and ran his own business as Adirondack Tree Service
doing tree work all over the North Country for most of his career until
retiring from the IBEW at age 55. As a talented
and seasoned tree climber, Pete was happy to mentor many new trainees,
sharing his knowledge and skill with those willing to learn. After retiring
from tree work he started his own business
building homes, camps and manufacturing rustic furniture for over 25
years.
Known by many in
the bar rooms around Number 4 and the Adirondacks, he enjoyed his life as a
lumberjack, treeman and outdoorsman. Pete, along
with his sisters, owned the Miller family camp on Beaver Lake. He spent
much time there every summer and was particularly fond of sunset cocktail
cruises on the party barge. He was a caretaker and friend of many on his
beloved Beaver Lake.
Peter is survived
by his wife Yvonne “Bonnie” McClure Miller, his step
daughter Shay Park Richards and daughter Kylie Miller, three
grandsons Kurtis (Daina) Dicob, Kane Richards and Alex Miller Piwinski, one
great-grandson Killian Dicob, four sisters JoEllen Murata, Wendy Nevills,
Dianne (Harry) Weiss and Amy (Gary) Crill along with many cousins, nephews,
nieces and their children. He is predeceased by his parents George and
Frisk Miller and his brother in law Robert “Bob”
Nevills.
Peter’s remains
will be cremated, there will be no calling hours or services. The family
will have a private memorial at the Miller camp this summer.
