Lowville Sees 6th Snowiest January on Record with Overall Temperature Slightly Above Average

Lowville, NY- Overall, Lowville saw temperatures slightly above average last month, according to weather data compiled from the Northeast Regional Climate Center (dating back to 1893), with slightly below average overall precipitation- while recording the 6th highest snow total for the month of January on record.

 

January finished with a mean average temperature (cumulative highs and lows) of 18.3 degrees in Lowville, a full degree above the normal mean average temperature for January in Lowville of 17.3 degrees. In terms of ranking, it was the 51st warmest January on record. The warmest January on record for Lowville occurred in 1932, when the mean average temperature for the month was 30.6 degrees. The coldest January occurred in 1994, when the mean average temperature was just 3.9 degrees for the month. The highest temperature of the month last month reached 43 degrees on January 1st. The lowest temperature recorded last month was negative-7 degrees on both January 30th and 31st.

 

January saw a total of 3.42 inches of total precipitation in Lowville, just below the normal 3.47 inches for the month, ranking as the 45th wettest January on record. The wettest January on record occurred in 1978, with 8.67 inches of precipitation recorded, while the driest January on record occurred in 1981, with just 0.38 inches of precipitation. The most precipitation recorded on a single day last month was 0.63 inches, recorded on January 1st.

The most snow recorded on a single day last month was 12 inches, recorded on January 28th.  Lowville has recorded 124.30 inches of snow for the season to date (16 inches in November, 49.4 inches in December and 58.9 inches in January). For perspective, Lowville received 80.1 inches of snow for the entire season last year. The mean total seasonal snowfall for Lowville is 119 inches, already making this season above average with a few months still to go.
