Lewis County
Health System Welcomes New Hospice Volunteer Coordinator
 LOWVILLE, NY - Lewis County
Health System is pleased to welcome Kathleen Merrick as the new Hospice
Volunteer Coordinator. Kathleen is responsible for identifying,
recruiting, and training volunteers for the Lewis County Hospice program,
which uses the many gifts of people from the area to give comfort, support,
and care to patients at end-of-life. She also manages and trains volunteers
for the health system.
"We are
thrilled that Kathleen Merrick has joined our team," stated LCHS Home
Health/Hospice Director of Patient Services DeyLynne
McConnell. "Hospice volunteers play a crucial part in the
overall success of the Hospice program, connecting patients and families
with volunteers who provide non-clinical support."
Kathleen returned
to Lowville in February. You may be familiar with her previous career as a
licensed massage therapist and owner of OPEN SKY Healing Arts Center, which
she sold in 2017. Together with her husband Charlie, Kathleen has been
living in Burlington, Vermont, for the last eight years, where she worked
for the University of Vermont Health Network Hospice team.
Kathleen states
that she and her husband Charles's hearts “were always in Lewis County, and
the couple was looking for an opportunity to return. The position as
Volunteer Coordinator was my invitation back and supports my commitment to
hospice and volunteering."
Her experience
also includes surgical scheduling at the University of Vermont Medical
Center, Burlington, VT; Community Care Rural Program Coordinator for the US
Department of Veterans Affairs, Syracuse, NY; Marketing Coordinator at Fort
Drum Regional Health Planning Organization, Watertown, NY; and Product
Manager at Verizon Communications Inc, Albany, NY. She earned a Bachelor of
Fine Arts from Daemen University, Amherst, NY, and certificates in
Healthcare Management and Leadership and Digital Marketing Fundamentals at
the University of Vermont, Burlington, VT.
Hospice and the
Health System are always welcoming new volunteers. There are plans for
Hospice volunteer training later this year and a meet-and-greet with all of the active volunteers. If you or you know someone
