Measures Implemented at Solid Waste Transfer Station in Lowville to Help with Recent Increase in People Driving Off without Paying Disposal Fees

LOWVILLE, NY- The Lewis County Solid Waste Transfer Station, located at 7952 State Route 26 in Lowville, has been reporting problems with residents leaving the transfer station without paying for the items they disposed of, according to a press release from Lewis County.

According to the release, Kip Turck, Director of Solid Waste, indicated that a number of measures have been implemented to help prevent people from driving off without paying the required fees in the future. One measure that has been implemented is the installation of a high-definition camera system that captures the license plate on every vehicle entering and leaving the facility. This information will be passed on to local law enforcement authorities for further action in cases where vehicles drive off without paying the required fees.

According to Mr. Turck, there have been approximately a dozen instances over the last month where drive-offs have occurred. The staff will be working diligently with local authorities going forward to put an end to the issue, according to the press release.

“We do not want to make these changes,” Mr. Turck said, “but since we are an enterprise system and rely on this income to keep our doors open, we feel we have no choice.”

An enterprise fund means that the department is not funded through tax dollars and must run on a balanced budget, with revenues equaling or exceeding expenditures.

Users of the facility are reminded that prior to leaving you must stop at the office, next to the scales and marked with signs, to pay for your disposal. The transfer station is open from 7 AM to 3 PM Monday through Friday and from 8 AM to 12 PM on Saturday. The current fee schedule for disposal of items is included below. There is no fee to drop off recyclables, electronic waste, steel, or other select items in the designated bins at the facility.
