Lowville Sees Above Average Mean Temperature for September with Below Average Precipitation

Lowville, NY- Overall, Lowville saw temperatures above normal during September, with well below normal precipitation levels, according to weather data compiled from the Northeast Regional Climate Center (dating back to 1893).

 

September finished with a mean average temperature (cumulative highs and lows) of 62.1 degrees in Lowville, a full 3.5 degrees above the normal mean average temperature for September in Lowville of 58.6 degrees. In terms of ranking, it was the 11th warmest September on record. The warmest September on record for Lowville occurred in 1961 with a mean average temperature of 67.1 degrees, with the coldest September on record occurring in 1918 with a mean average temperature of 51.9 degrees for the month. The highest temperature of the month last month reached 84 degrees on September 16th. The lowest temperature recorded last month was 40 degrees on September 3rd.

 

The 40-degree low temperature for the month was the warmest lowest temperature for any September on record for Lowville. In more years than not Lowville has actually seen at least one below-freezing temperature during the month of September. This is the second time this year that a month has set the record for the warmest lowest temperature during the month, which also occurred during May. Every month this year so far has finished in the top ten for warmest lowest temperature of the month, with the exception of March which fell just outside the top 10 at number 12.

 

After a record-setting amount of precipitation during the summer months, September saw just 1.60 inches of total precipitation in Lowville, 1.89 inches below the 3.49 inch normal for the month. This ranked as the 13th driest September on record, with the driest occurring in 1948 when just 0.21 inches of precipitation was recorded and the wettest occurring in 1945 with 7.37 inches. Measurable precipitation was recorded on 7 days during September, with 4 additional days recording a trace amount, with September 26th recording the most precipitation for the month at 0.42 inches.

 

Year-to-date, Lowville has received 41.15 inches of precipitation, 11.45 inches above the 29.70 inch average normally received through September.
