Lowville Sets August Precipitation Record Following
Record-Setting July Amounts

Lowville, NY- Overall,
Lowville saw temperatures near normal during August, with record-setting precipitation
levels, according to weather data compiled from the Northeast Regional Climate Center (dating
back to 1893).
August finished
with a mean average temperature (cumulative highs and lows) of 66.3 degrees
in Lowville, 0.1 degrees above the normal mean average temperature for August
in Lowville of 66.2 degrees. In terms of ranking, it was tied as the 54th
warmest August on record. The warmest August on record for Lowville
occurred in both 1928 and 1947 with a mean average temperature of 71.2
degrees, with the coldest August on record occurring in 1903 with a mean
average temperature of 59.8 degrees for the month. The
highest temperature of the month last month reached 86 degrees on August 2nd,
5th, and 16th. The lowest temperature recorded last month was 47 degrees on
August 20th, 21st, and 22nd.
Two interesting
notes from last month regarding temperature:

The 53 degrees recorded as the high temperature for
August 22 was the lowest high temperature ever recorded for Lowville during
the month of August, breaking the previous record of 57 degrees (by 4 full degrees)
recorded in both 1982 and 1986.

The 47 degree low
temperature recorded on three days last month tied as the 8th warmest low
temperature recorded in Lowville during the month of August.
August saw 9.07
inches of total precipitation in Lowville, 5.23 inches above the 3.80 inch
normal for the month. This ranked as the most precipitation ever recorded
for August in Lowville, breaking the previous record of 8.65 inches
recorded in August of 1893 and 1983, and the 5th wettest month overall on
record. The driest August on record occurred in 1940 with just 0.42 inches
of precipitation measured. Measurable precipitation was recorded on 15 days
during August, with 1 additional day recording a trace amount, with August
10 recording the most precipitation for the month at 2.67 inches. The majority of precipitation for the month was received
during a 12 day stretch between August 9 and August 20, with 7.85 inches
recorded during that time.
This is the second
month in a row that Lowville has broken a monthly precipitation record,
with July setting the all-time monthly precipitation record at 10.6 inches.
This followed the 9th wettest June on record, with 6.23 inches of
precipitation recorded during June of 2024, making 2024 the wettest summer
on record with 25.9 inches of precipitation recorded between June 1 and August
31. Normal precipitation for the June 1 through August 31 period is 11.0
inches.

precipitation over the past few months:

August of 2024 is the just the second month on record
to receive 2.25 inches or more of precipitation on two different days
during the month (2.67 inches for the period ending on August 10, 2024 and 2.25 inches for the period ending on August 20,
2024), tying June of 1905. In fact, recording 2.25 inches or more of
precipitation in a 24-hour period multiple times during the same YEAR (let
alone month) has only happened 9 times (1989 and 2024 both with 3 days with
2.25 inches or more of precipitation in a 24-hour period and 1893, 1905, 1941,
1980, 1998, 2010 and 2017 with 2 days with 2.25 inches or more of
precipitation in a 24-hour period).

August) with 2.5 inches or more of precipitation in a 24-hour period. The
only other time this has happened in back-to back months was in August and
September of 1941.

Lowville recorded 1.25 inches or more of
precipitation during 6 different 24-hour periods between June 1 and August
31, the most such occasions of any summer on record. The summers of 1947,
2005 and 2017 each received 1.25 inches or more of precipitation during 4
different 24-hour periods.

2024 is the only year with precipitation records for
two different months (and back-to-back months).

Lowville has received 39.55 inches of precipitation, 13.34 inches above the
26.21 inch average normally received through August.
For Lowville, the wettest year on record was 2017 when a total of 55.64
inches of precipitation was recorded for the year. Normal precipitation for
September 1 through December 31 in Lowville is 15.32 inches, putting 2024 on
pace to be one of the wettest years on record if just an average amount of
precipitation is received during the remaining four months of the year.
October traditionally has the highest average precipitation amounts in
