ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) is the term used to help define and understand the struggles of households that earn more than the federal poverty level but less than what it takes to make ends meet, according to UWNNY.  ALICE are those hard-working members of the community dealing with the pressures of economic instability, particularly when a hardship or unplanned expense arises. United Way partners with numerous organizations to provide support to ALICE families by connecting them to resources to address barriers and assisting with financial literacy, education, and workforce readiness.

The unique fundraiser, sponsored by Marks Farms and CDPHP, offered a fun and innovative way for fair patrons to help a friend or neighbor in need by making a donation to support ALICE and then choosing who they wanted to see kiss the blue-ribbon cow on the final day of the fair on July 20, from the six participants in the event. Votes could be cast for Chris Peck, Partner at Marks Farms; Mike Carpinelli, Lewis County Sheriff; Todd Green, Superintendent of Beaver River Central School District; Doug and Jennifer Premo, Superintendents of South Lewis and Carthage Central School districts respectively; Emily Griffin, 7 News Reporter; and Dawn Cole, CEO of United Way of Northern New York.

Doug and Jennifer Premo raised the highest donation total for the event, at $2,355, narrowly edging out Sheriff Carpinelli to earn the honor of kissing Soda Pop, the blue-ribbon cow from Rossdale Farm (pictured above).

Organizers said being at the fair was a great week of making connections and talking to people about the program while raising money for a great cause.
