Description automatically generatedAnnette “Nan“ Johnson, 97, a resident of Sunset Nursing Home in Boonville, formerly of Lowville, passed peacefully after a short illness on August 15th, 2024

Fred Louis Johnson, 97, passed away in an assisted living facility in Las Vegas, NV, on September 13th, 2020, with his beloved wife, Nan at his side.

They are survived by a son in law, Mark (Linda) Birchenough, as well as two sets of twin grandchildren: Kelly and Kenneth Birchenough (Lowville, NY), as well as Kailey and Kody Johnson (Las Vegas, NV).

They were predeceased by their daughter, Karen Johnson Birchenough (1999), their son, Kenneth Frederick Johnson (2020), brother Paul (Nan) and sisters, Ruth and Charlotte (Fred).

Annette was born in New York on January 17th, 1927 to Frank and Rose Argento.

Fred was born in New York on August 19th, 1923 to Paul and Catherine Johnson

Fred was enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during World War II in the 69th Regiment out of New York City. They married January 31, 1948

Fred attended The NYS Ranger School in Wanakena, NY. He worked his way around different posts, eventually becoming the district manager and ran the former DEC Tree Nursery, in Lowville NY.

Nan was a telephone operator and worked and volunteered at the Lewis County General Hospital gift shop.

They made a home together on Sunset Drive in Lowville, NY and raised two children, Karen Ruth Johnson and Kenneth Frederick Johnson.

In 1981 they retired to Long Island, NY and eventually in 1987, to Sedona, AZ where they enjoyed the weather, playing tennis and cards, and cooking Italian cuisine. They were avid hikers into their 80’s. Fred continued his love of the outdoors with his gardening and landscaping with plants native to the area. They traveled extensively abroad together and welcomed visits from their grandchildren most summers.

No calling hours or services will be held.

We would like to thank the nurses and other staff that cared for Nan at the Lewis County General Hospital and nursing home, Terrace at Woodland Assisted Living in Rome, and most recently Sunset Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Boonville. Donations can be made to any of the facilities listed above and The NY Ranger School, in their names.
