Heavy Rain and Risk of Potential Flash Flooding Possible Friday as Remnants of Post-Tropical Storm Debby Expected to Impact Lewis County

Lewis County, NY- Heavy rain is possible Friday into Friday evening with the remnants of post-tropical storm Debby expected to impact the region. The latest forecast from the National Hurricane Center this afternoon shows the potential for 2 to 4 inches of rain from the storm for our region, with localized higher amounts possible. The Storm Prediction Center has Lewis County in a Level 3 of 4 (moderate) risk for potential flash flooding Friday through Saturday morning. Rain is expected to begin Thursday night as the system approaches the region.

Description automatically generatedCurrently, Tropical Storm Debby is located in the Atlantic Ocean, just off the coast of South Carolina, after an initial landfall on Monday as a hurricane in the Big Bend region along the Gulf Coast of Florida. After a slow trek across northern Florida and into Georgia the storm moved back into open water on Tuesday afternoon just off the coast of the Georgia/South Carolina border. Tropical Storm Debby is expected to make a second U.S. landfall late tonight or early Thursday morning in South Carolina as it makes a slow move to the north, before picking up forward speed and accelerating to the north/northeast on Friday as currently forecast.

 

 

There are no current watches or warnings in place at this time for Lewis County from the National Weather Service in Buffalo but stay tuned as forecasts are updated and the system approaches. We’ll have an update tomorrow with the latest information.
