Following a successful debut at the 2024
Lewis County Fair, CCE Lewis County’s Farm to School program is excited to
include its Farm and Market Discovery Zone in this year's Open Farm Day.
The farm-to-table themed play area will be available at the Lewis County –
JCC Education Center in Lowville on Saturday, August 10, from 10:00 am to
3:00 pm.
"Our goal
with the Discovery Zone is to make learning about agriculture fun and
engaging for kids. The positive feedback we received in the Youth Building
at the Fair shows we're on the right track, and we're excited to expand
this experience to more community events." said David Nisley, Farm to
School Education Coordinator. "We believe that fostering this
connection early on is vital to inspiring a lifelong appreciation for where
food comes from – and can have a positive impact on trying fresh, local
foods served in their school cafeterias."
The Farm and
Market Discovery Zone is divided into three interactive sections: Grow,
Shop, and Cook. Kids are invited to play with toy animals, explore a farmers market with toy produce, pretend to cook, read
farm-themed stories, and more. It’s just one of the locations available
during Open Farm Day. Twelve farms throughout Lewis County will offer
unique agricultural experiences such as tours, free samples, and animal
interactions. From dairies and berry farms to mushroom and maple producers,
families can enjoy a wide variety of activities while learning about the
importance of local agriculture.
