Lewis County Declares State of Emergency Due to
Flooding in Central Portion of County

Lowville, NY- Lewis County
declared a State of Emergency around 6:30 p.m. this evening, according to
County Manager Ryan Piche, due to flooding occurring in the central portion
of the county.
Mr. Piche said a
No Unnecessary Travel Advisory is in effect countywide, with many roads
impassable in central parts of the county. Some road closures include the
Number Four Road, Snell Road, Pine Grove Road, West Road, and State Route
12 (bridge near Mark’s Farm).
The Village of
Lowville also declared a State of Emergency with widespread flooding
reported throughout the village. Many streets are impassable and dangerous,
according to Police Chief Daryl Ortlieb. A No Unnecessary Travel Advisory
has been issued in the Village as well.
A shelter,
staffed by the American Red Cross, has been set up at the Double Play
Community Center on Bardo Road for anyone who may be flooded out of their
home or are unable to get to their home due to road closures from the
flooding.
Fire crews from
neighboring departments have responded to Lowville to assist with pumping
basements, evacuating some residences, and closing roads and streets.
Flooding is reported in the north end of the village, including Bostwick
Street, Park Ave., Summit, Trinity Avenue to the south end of the village
along Utica Boulevard and Ross Road.
Mr. Piche said
that extra help from the New York State Police, Forest Rangers and
Environmental Conservation Officers have arrived in Lewis County to assist
with the developing situation.
A Flash Flood
WARNING from the National Weather Service remains in effect for Central
Lewis County until 10:15 p.m.
