Lowville, NY- Cornell
Cooperative Extension Lewis County’s Farm to School program will debut a
new Farm and Market play area at the 2024 Lewis County Fair, in the Youth
Building alongside other free activities. The hands-on exhibit will
introduce kids to the importance of growing, cooking, and eating local
foods.
The Farm and
Market Play Area features three engaging sections:
Grow: This section
introduces kids to the world of farming with live plants, a play rug, and
books for family-led story times.
Shop: This
vibrant farmers market lets children pretend to shop for their
favorite foods and learn about the variety of products that come from local
farms.
Cook: In the
kitchen-themed section, young chefs can slice, stir, bake, and cook foods using kid-friendly tools. Illustrated recipes
provide clear connections between agriculture and our daily meals.
“We’re excited to
offer this new experience to children and their families,” says David
Nisley, Education Coordinator of the Lewis County Farm to School Program.
“Our goal is to foster a deeper appreciation for the bounty of our local
farms and producers.
The Farm and
Market play area will be open daily throughout the fair, July 16-20, 2024.
The Farm to
School program serves as a resource for schools, farmers, and producers who
are interested in expanding access to local foods through classroom
activities and outreach initiatives. For more information about the Farm to
School program of CCE Lewis County, please contact David Nisley, Farm to
School Education Coordinator, at 315-376-5270 or drn44@cornell.edu, or
